Yetnebersh Nigussie, Co-Founder and former Executive Director of ECDD has been awarded the prestigious Right Livelihood Award 2017!

Yetnerbersh has been recognized “for her inspiring work promoting the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities…and changing mind-sets in our societies." She joins three other outstanding Laureates for 2017 who have also been recognized by the Right Livelihood Award Foundation: Human rights lawyer Colin Gonsalves from India, investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova from Azerbaijan, and the US environmental lawyer Robert Bilott.

The Laureates of this year’s Right Livelihood Award, widely referred to as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’, were announced on September 26 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Ole von Uexkull, Executive Director of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation, said:

“This year’s Laureates protect the rights and lives of citizens across three continents. With their courageous work for human rights, public health and good governance, they tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges at their very core. At a time of alarming setbacks for democracy, their successes show us the way forward towards a just, peaceful and sustainable world for all.”

Yetnebersh, who served ECDD in various capacities for over 10 years, is presently Senior Inclusion Advisor at Light for the World International. Being visually impaired, Yetnebersh says the Award sends a strong signal that women with disabilities are significant contributors to international development.

On receiving notification of the Award, Yetnebersh said:

“If I could change one thing in the world, I would change people’s mindsets to think that inclusion—not exclusion—is the norm.”  Indeed, she says the Award belongs to the entire global disability rights community and the more than one billion people “who have been deprived of equal opportunities, for the only reason that they have one or more forms of disabilities.”

The entire ECDD family – Association, Board and Staff members as well as all ECDD partners and friends – extend our hearty CONGRATULATIONS to “Our Own” Yetnebersh!   We are all extremely proud of you and your achievements, and look forward to celebrating with you this outstanding international recognition.

As a service to job seekers with disabilities ECDD posts here recent public job vacancies.
