The Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) has expanded inclusive Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) to 725 households with persons with disabilities, reaching 3,532 individuals in internally displaced person (IDP) and host communities in Shire.
Funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the assistance is helping households affected by food insecurity and economic hardship to meet their essential needs with greater dignity, choice and flexibility.
“Cash assistance enables households to prioritize and address their most urgent needs while preserving dignity, choice and flexibility. By ensuring that persons with disabilities and their families are meaningfully included in humanitarian assistance, this support contributes to a more inclusive, equitable, and responsive humanitarian system,” said Legassu Leulseged, Program Director at ECDD.

Initially, 395 households—276 IDP households and 119 host-community households—received ETB 12,050 per household per round for three rounds, reaching 1,945 individuals, including 1,005 females.
Following gains from the exchange rate, ECDD was able to extend the assistance to an additional 330 households, comprising 231 IDP and 99 host-community households. The households received their first round at ETB 15,400 per household, based on the transfer value established by the Regional Cash Working Group, with two additional rounds planned.
The first round of support to the additional households reached 1,587 individuals, including 810 females.
Through the intervention, ECDD is working to ensure that persons with disabilities and their families are not left behind in humanitarian responses and can better cope with food insecurity and economic challenges.
